Disclaimer: The writings in this series discuss the destructive forces which I label as the “serpent spirit” - a metaphor for systemic wickedness, envy, jealousy, deceit, idolatry, bondage and oppression. It is directed at the serpent spirit, not at nations or ethnicities. I write from a spiritual perspective, seeking to understand how these forces manifest and how communities might break free of them. I categorically reject racism, xenophobia, or any narrative that devalues human dignity. If my analysis appears to do so, please read it as a fault in my expression, not in my intent, and you are welcomed to join the conversation to sharpen our collective insight.
From a 5-day course I attended in 2009, “Understanding the Foundations of Nations and Generations”, the teacher, Dr Tamara Winslow, posed this question quoted from Psalms 11:3:
“When the foundations are destroyed, what shall the righteous do?”
Let me just take a moment to define what is righteousness.
Righteousness is simply like what God said about Abraham – he was credited with righteousness because he simply believed what God told him (Genesis 15:6, Galatians 3:6, Romans 4:3), even when everything looked impossible, illogical and daunting.
When the distressed father begged the Lord Jesus to deliver his mute son tormented by a demon and Jesus said: “All things are possible to him who believes!”. To which the father replied this honest answer: “I do believe, help me with my unbelief” (Mark 9:23-24)
Righteousness is when we choose to believe in the authority and power that Jesus possesses, even when our brains work against us and our heart struggles with unbelief. It is knowing and feeling the Spirit of God living within us so we are certain of what we do not see.
Righteousness is not something we can earn with good deeds. It can only be credited by God, like a bank crediting us with interest if we deposit our savings with them; all based on trust and belief that our hard earned money is safe in their hands when all we have is a piece of paper or a digital record.
That is counted as righteousness.
This is the call for the righteous ones of the Lord.
So, I beg this question: What shall the righteous do Lord to free themselves and their nation from the bondage to this great serpent and Mammon?
In the Story of V, God calls to America to return to the spirit of the pioneers, who, by faith, built a brave new world with nothing and honoured God in her Constitution.
A few years ago, Kelly shared when we were at our retreat in Switzerland the Chinese word containing two mouths 口:
回
Which means “return” and which also means the echo.
2 Chronicles 7:14 comes to mind:
If my people who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
And Jeremiah 33:3:
Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.
So, I asked: How do we return to the Lord?
V: First and foremost, sober up.
Take a good look inside you. What have you and your family been feeding on? On good and healthy things or on the intoxicating wine, song and sweet mixture of the serpent on the TV screen, in the movies, on the mobile phone and on the internet? Do they cause your hearts and minds to grow in knowledge and wisdom or are they causing them to be numbed, deaf and blind to the real world outside and to the voice of God within?
If you have found yourself trapped in addiction, unable to free yourself from the snares of the serpent, or have fallen into sexual sin, recognise your impotence and call out to God for only He is able to set you free. Seek help from god-fearing brothers and sisters and also get professional help if need be, especially when dealing with addictions.
The last thing is to hide your sin or failures. The serpent wants you to do exactly that.
Christians and Christian nations have to recognise and take responsibility for the predicament they have found themselves in.
It is not China or Vietnam or any country that has caused your country to be in a huge trade deficit. It is not anyone else’s fault or problem that your country is mired in debt. It is the government and the officials whom you have elected, who continually print paper money so that your country may recklessly consume way over what you are willing or able to work for and produce, therefore debasing your currency and your worth.
Come to your senses and get a grip of the numbers. Mathematics is finite. You either make the numbers work or remain on the mat of crippling debt and of blame and shame. I have expended a huge amount of energy to write that series on Money, Your Slave or Your Master, in 2023. I recommend you go through them once again.
Where you have tried your utmost and still find yourselves short, remember that Jesus is able to multiply 5 loaves and 2 fishes to feed 5,000 without even lifting his finger and with leftovers too. He has done it for me and for many in our community, over and over, usually with just a moment-of-truth revelation. It has saved men and families from financial distress and suicide and led them not only to financial freedom but also to great abundance and joy.
Take a look around your home and your workplace. Is everything pleasing to God? If it is not, then it is time to do some spring cleaning to discard and to destroy things that are an abomination to God, for as the Good Book says, lest you get destroyed together with them.
Ever since I was born again, I made sure that there are no idols in my home or in our business. The Lord is the Head of my home, so I do not allow pornography, foul talk, superstitions, gambling (as it can be addictive and lead us to neglect our children) or any objects that make the Holy Spirit within me uncomfortable or sad.
On one occasion, I found a row of Buddha heads on sale in our showroom and my husband became angry and defensive when I gave him that look, maintaining that these are merely works of art and he cannot interfere with his Retail Manager’s buying decisions. I understand but still, I brought my annoyance to God in prayer. About a week later, he had those idols removed because the Holy Spirit gave him no peace about it. Hallelujah! Our Retail Manager later received Christ as her Saviour too and has been on fire for God ever since. So, God put a stop to that problem from happening again. How clever and marvellous.
V showed me this acronym – CITOAH – ”The City on a Hill” many years back.
Godly homes and communities will be cities of God and will be a shining beacon where Christ will draw all men unto Him. We strengthened our foundation with strong family ties and traditions that honour God and filled in the gaps with the little stones of faith and testimonies. We were vigilant about the sanctity of our marriage, leaving no room for the serpent to destroy our family, as from time to time, it will try to sneak in. We built fences, establishing boundaries, to keep the foxes out of our homes lest they ruin our vineyard, for it is where we grow our most precious fruit – our children.
I used to say that when they were little, I watched over my kids like a hawk, with two eyes wide open. Then as they grew, I kept only one eye open, to allow them to discover their own identity. And when they turn into teenagers, V tells me to shut both eyes and both ears for I will not like what I see or hear. They were puzzled; my son commented that it was as though I didn’t care anymore. I do of course, but when V assured me – “that surely all your years on bended knees praying over them amount to something”, and gave me Isaiah 54:13, I know that my work is done and I relinquish them to God’s mighty hands.
I made my home very welcoming to their teen friends, providing good food and good conversations. Today, they are all grown-ups and it is wonderful to see them from time to time again, with great joy, thankful they have all made it safely through difficult and treacherous years.
We learnt the importance of praying individually and corporately – releasing wisdom, light, love and the fear of God into our land and driving out what is dark and evil – in commerce, in education, in our legal system, in civic society and so on. Since 1995, Christians from over 200 churches in Singapore under the Love Singapore movement have been praying and fasting for our nation for forty days every year without stopping. We have prayer walked across every part of our country, individually or together.
God has His eyes on us and heard our humble prayers, this I am sure. For we are little sparrows, a little island surrounded by Muslim nations. We do not have any natural resources or physical boundaries. Our only defence and provider is God who has blessed our nation far beyond what we can imagine. We are wary and on our guard at the same time, for the most dangerous time is when a country prospers and people are well-off, lest we get proud or complacent.
I am reminded of a word I recently read in the papers: “Benevolent dictatorship”.
Wiki: A benevolent dictatorship is a government that has a leader considered by some as a dictator but has the support of the people, unlike a malevolent dictator who only focuses on themselves, their government and their supporters. In benevolent dictatorships, there is some freedom of speech and democracy.
Then I chanced on a video interview with the late Charlie Munger. He was very enamoured by our late Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew (LKY):
“LKY had the best record as a nation builder that ever lived, probably has the best record that ever existed in the history of the world. He took over a malarial swamp with no army, no nothing and pretty soon, he turned that into this gloriously prosperous place. And his method for doing it was so simple: Figure out what works and do it.”
If you like, you can hear his reply when asked if India could do the same. Very insightful. https://youtu.be/y3M4uKKVuEo?si=MOgRJ6Y7JSsdOovD
Well-loved and revered in my country, LKY makes no apologies for his determination and decisions to build our country even when he was vilified by the Western world and the press as a dictator for not choosing their style and way of democracy. Fast forward 66 years, with LKY passing on nearly ten years ago, we have elected the party he founded over and over to lead our country without a break.
That political system has worked very well for us thus far. Of course, it is not perfect and change is on the horizon and what works for us may not be the same for others. More importantly, what I feel V is impressing upon me is the need for stability and continuity – to keep the flame going for God and for good, in our homes and in our country, for a long, long time.
So, as Christians in America applaud and sigh with relief that Trump has stopped all the madness in his country and pushed back all the evil works of the serpent, the question is – who will continue to carry this torch when his term ends? And for how long? If not, the serpent will surely destroy all that has been accomplished.
For some countries, the obstacles are many, their debt is huge and the serpent has entwined itself very tightly over their economy. Leaders have to make unpopular decisions, taking two steps back before they can go three steps forward. It may mean corporate and personal sacrifice, hardship and hard work over a generation or two. This problem cannot be solved by a President with just one term in office.
So, there is a need to plan ahead, to attract and to continually groom capable men and women to step up for successorship and godly and sensible leadership - in government, in public service, in business and in every important part of society.
This is the most essential job for parents and grandparents in every generation. Besides modelling for the young a life of godly living and faith and providing a home that is safe and nurturing, they have to ground them with good work discipline, habits and skills to help them fully actualise their God given gifts and talents. In achieving excellence in whichever industry and in whatever vocation they are called to, they will restore health to their community and to the economy.
Last November, we were so thrilled to visit Hernnhut, Germany, the birthplace of the Moravian miracle. This non-stop 24/7 prayer movement lasted for more than 100 years started with the Holy Spirit descending on young girls and boys, girls in particular, raised by God fearing parents and communities escaping persecution in their homeland. They also started the biggest mission outreach to the farthest parts of the world. Reading a few books about them, I am humbled and stupefied by their courageous and fearless spirit, preparing coffins for the entire family, young and old, in their send-off party, anticipating that none may come back alive!
When we were at the tower, God sent a huge fog so that we couldn’t see the entire town, to the dismay of our guide. V told us not to look at the past, for the brave soldiers and servants of the Lord are at rest and at peace there, but to look at the future, out there in the rest of the world.
I anticipate that a great anointing is ready to be released once again on our boys and girls in this age.

Worshipping together on our Monday morning meeting yesterday, V has one more thing to add to this list:
V: About California. Stop the money flowing into her bank. Stop buying her music. Stop buying into her tantalising dream for instant fame and fortune. Stop paying insane amounts of dollars to celebrities and musicians for their concerts and for the products they endorse. Switch it off. Turn them down. That is how you start to cleanse your country and your home of debauchery and dissipation.
This reminds me of a verse:
You say, ‘I am rich; I have grown wealthy and need nothing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked. I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined by fire so that you may become rich, white garments so that you may be clothed and your shameful nakedness not exposed, and salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see. Revelations 3:17-18
Snakes on the Move
I shared with the members how much resistance I am encountering in trying to finish this writing about this great serpent and how another long brown snake showed up at my place again yesterday when my helper took out the trash, which gave her a huge fright.
They have been keeping me in prayer and remarked that this year is the Chinese zodiac Year of the Snake too! I have forgotten about that! To be honest, I was grappling with how sensitive this series of writing may be, worrying that I may have bit off more than I can chew.
This morning, the estate cleaner showed me yet another snake, this time white and skinny, coiled in a corner of my car park space. This is the 4th visitation since March 25 when I first started writing, with a black one spotted by my helper at my patio when we were away in China,
I thought to myself: 4 snakes of different size and shade in 5 weeks!
In all the past nine years that we stayed here, we had only encountered 3.
This writing has got the serpent’s attention!
I must be right on track.
So, on bended knees I went, praying for God’s protection over my home and my loved ones and for strength and clarity. And then I got right back to work on finishing up this series of posts.
