Disclaimer: The writings in this series discuss the destructive forces which I label as the “serpent spirit” - a metaphor for systemic wickedness, envy, jealousy, deceit, idolatry, bondage and oppression. It is directed at the serpent spirit, not at nations or ethnicities. I write from a spiritual perspective, seeking to understand how these forces manifest and how communities might break free of them. I categorically reject racism, xenophobia, or any narrative that devalues human dignity. If my analysis appears to do so, please read it as a fault in my expression, not in my intent, and you are welcomed to join the conversation to sharpen our collective insight.
The Finale
Just when I thought I was done with the writing for this series, V has one more to add.
He made me recall the uncomfortably euphoric worship at the Topeka revival meeting we attended about fifteen years ago. In the midst of all the shouting and noise, they did a symbolic act to repent for the sins against the black people in America, and finished with a prophetic act of reconciliation thinking they have fixed it
The Holy Spirit impressed upon me then - the problem here is not about racial issues, is it?
But it is the mixture, remember?
The Slave Mentality
I understand it now. They, the African Americans in the US, have imbibed this deadly mixture of sweet chocolate which I saw in the dream in the plane to Topeka, the drink that had a little bit of poop added to it. In consuming what seemed delicious and good in their eyes, they fell into a life of sensual living, alcohol and drugs, paralysing themselves and robbing them of the ability to provide for their families and to live with dignity.
All the help and handouts of previous US administrations have not helped them. Instead, it made them lose the desire and ability for self-sufficiency, while the serpent went on to actively inflame more hate and rage, taking focus and energy from what their real problem is - within them and their community.
So, the root problem facing African Americans in the US today is not the slavery and racial discrimination they had suffered in the past, although horrible and unjust, but a different form of slavery.
A slave mentality.
Like the Israelites in the Book of Exodus. God had sent Moses to free them from hundreds of years of slavery but they cannot remove that slave mentality within them. Except for Joshua and Caleb, everyone in that generation perished in the wilderness, when the Promised Land was right before their eyes.
No Slaves in Christ
V: But today, if they hear my voice and turn from their wicked ways, I will free them from slavery and restore their dignity and their identity in Christ, for there is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Yes, Lord Jesus, no matter where or when in this world, there will always be racial prejudice and discrimination whether one is black, white, yellow, brown or anything in between. I thank God that in You, we are all one, offered a life free from hate and bondage, victorious and abundant, prospering as our soul prospers.
Then V reminds me of the word that he has told Sharon many times: “Remnant”.
I am encouraged by that. Just like how God assured Elijah that he is not the only one who remained faithful, God has preserved a remnant of godly African Americans who are not afraid to confront the truth about themselves to their people. They will be well-positioned to help each other battle against the serpent and achieve all the good they want for their people and their nation, restoring their dignity, out of the slave mentality, out of slavery, once and for all.
Learn from the Ants
V: Consider the hardworking ants, the Asians. How they cherish dignity and teach their children about being upright and self-sufficient, how invested they are in their children’s education and their diligence at whatever they do. Learn from them. They went out to other countries as foreign labour when they cannot find enough in their land to feed their families. They sent their hard-earned money home regularly without fail while they ate and lived frugally. Discriminated and disadvantaged, they supported each other, and found ways to thrive and succeed, securing their future and helping their community when trouble comes.
I thought to myself, indeed, this is the legacy of dignity and sacrificial living for common good that my late father passed down to us. He left his beloved homeland on a slow boat from China in a time of famine. And provided not only for our huge family of 15, but also for his impoverished mother and his siblings’ families in China without complaint.
It is the same for Asian communities even to this day – from Indonesia, Philippines, India, Bangladesh, China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand and many more – doing any job anywhere in the world to earn an honest living – as construction workers, waitresses, domestic helpers, farm hand, sales girls, cleaners, repairmen and so on. They persevered in spite of all their personal difficulty and hardship in the hope that their children would not have to suffer as much as they did.
Do you know that ants, although small and seemingly weak, are in fact the strongest animal in the world as they are able to lift a significant amount of weight compared to their own mass, up to 50 times their body weight?
The people in Christian nations have a far greater advantage, from the legacy of their fore-fathers and forerunners, of God’s great love and care pulling the weight for them.
The Crossover
V then talked about the urgency of reminding the children about God’s faithfulness and love. It led me to read Deuteronomy 6 as a new generation of Israelites prepare to cross over to the Promised Land, which I shall paraphrase verses 5-19 below:
Love the Lord your God
With all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.
Impress them on your children.
Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road,
When you lie down and when you get up.
When you work with your hands, remember God.
When you use your brains, think about God.
Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
When the Lord your God brings you into the land he gives you
And to large, flourishing cities you did not build,
Houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, Wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant
Then when you eat and are satisfied,
Be careful that you do not forget the Lord,
Who brought you out of slavery to Mammon.
Fear the Lord your God, serve him only
And take your oaths in his name (no others, no mixture)
Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you; For the Lord your God, who is among you, is a jealous God
And his anger will burn against you,
And he will destroy you from the face of the land.
Do not put the Lord your God to the test.
Be sure to keep the commands of the Lord your God
And the stipulations and decrees he has given you.
Do what is right and good in the Lord’s sight,
So that it may go well with you
And you may cross over and take over the good land,
thrusting out all the serpents and its minions before you.
Hallelujah! Thank you Lord for your instructions and Your wondrous love. I look forward to the day when Your holy laws are written once again on the city gates of the nations who had once revered and loved You and they boldly and unashamedly declare:
“IN GOD WE TRUST”
On this note, with much relief and thanksgiving to our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, I conclude this series of posts.
May 5, 2025
It has been a huge battle to get this series of posts to the finish line as I endured stiffness and tremors in my neck. I even pondered if I should publish this final post at all as the tremors got worse.
Closing my eyes to sleep last night, I saw a huge black cobra with its head raised, poised for attack. Remembering the post that this is the time for offensive warfare, I took my sword and chopped off its head. Then I saw more serpents coming out from under the rocks. So I called upon my heavenly army to ferret them all out and soon we were in full battle. I remembered the eagles. Yes, Sharon’s troop of eagles. They came to my cry for help and soon enough the serpents were all vanquished. Relieved and satisfied, I went back to sleep.
This morning, our Monday morning worship started with a mighty drum beat of war! Florence had prepared it last Friday. We worshipped to many rounds of this song “Awesome God”. Later, V reminded me:
“Today is 5/5/25. 5555. V V V V. Breakthrough!”
And this worship song came on, singing over and over:
“His goodness will come running, running after me”
Hallelujah and Amen! His goodness, not the serpents, will be running after me from now on 🙂
